Bahamas
Sail from the Turks and Caicos into the remote southern Bahamas, linking isolated islands across long stretches of open water. After a short first leg to West Caicos, we’ll make the passage to Great Inagua, clear into The Bahamas at Matthew Town and spend a day exploring one of the country’s least-visited islands.
From Inagua, the route will depend on the forecast. We may sail overnight to Rum Cay before continuing through Cape Santa Maria, or work north through Crooked or Acklins Island and Long Island. Either route ends in George Town, Great Exuma.
This voyage is designed for sailors and future cruisers who want experience with offshore watchkeeping, passage planning, international clearance and the practical realities of reaching remote islands. We will do some night sailing.
Weather & Season
Mid-April falls near the end of the dry season in the Turks and Caicos and The Bahamas. Days are generally warm, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s°F, nights in the low to mid-70s and water temperatures around 80°F.
Easterly trade winds are common, although late-season cold fronts can still bring wind shifts, stronger northerly breezes and Atlantic swell. Conditions may vary considerably along this route: the passages are exposed, the islands are widely separated and several possible anchorages offer limited protection in unfavorable weather. We’ll likely spend a majority of our time downwind sailing or beam reaching, with the split influenced by the wind speed and waves state, as well as which route we choose.
We’ll choose between the Rum Cay and Crooked/Acklins routes based on the forecast, sea state, anchorage conditions and our ability to make safe daylight arrivals. That decision may be made during the voyage, and stops may change as conditions develop.
