This expedition from St. Martin/St. Maarten to Fajardo combines an overnight offshore passage with island navigation through the US and Spanish Virgin Islands.

After preparing the boat and watching for a suitable departure window, we’ll leave St. Martin / St. Maarten in the late afternoon and sail west toward St. John. The approximately 100–115-mile passage will take us through a full night of watch rotations, with our route planned to remain clear of BVI territorial waters and reach the US Virgin Islands during daylight.

After clearing into the United States, the focus shifts to shorter coastal passages. We’ll spend time exploring St. John before continuing west to Culebra and Vieques, practicing navigation, anchoring and passage planning along the way.

The final route will depend on the wind, sea state and anchorage conditions we encounter. We may adjust the order or duration of stops, but the plan is to preserve the overnight passage, arrive at each new destination during daylight and finish in the Fajardo area with time to prepare for your onward travel.

Weather & Season

Early March falls within the drier, breezier season across the northern Caribbean. Daytime temperatures typically reach the low 80s°F, with nights in the mid-70s and water temperatures around 79°F.

Easterly to northeasterly trade winds commonly run around 15–20 knots offshore, with lighter periods and occasional stronger days. The westbound route generally gives us a favorable sailing angle, although conditions through the exposed channels between islands can still become brisk.

Late-season winter systems can temporarily alter the trades or send northerly swell toward exposed anchorages. We’ll monitor those conditions when selecting our departure window from St. Martin and choosing stops throughout the US and Spanish Virgin Islands.

The overnight passage and subsequent itinerary will remain weather-dependent. Expect an active open-water passage and real overnight conditions. A favorable forecast may give us moderate following seas, but brisk trade winds, northerly swell and uncomfortable motion remain possible. We may adjust departure time, routing or anchorages to maintain daytime arrivals and avoid unsuitable conditions.
